Not enough room in sanctuaries for chimps from research labs

CLE ELUM, Wash. - Deep in the bucolic landscape of Eastern Washington, hidden among the rolling hills and family farms lies a legacy of suffering rarely seen by human eyes. Seven chimpanzees rescued from government warehouses live out their golden years in peace and happiness at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, a retirement home for chimps who have spend their lives as research labs.
"This life now is remarkably better than what it was before for them," said Diana Goodrich, Chimp Sanctuary NW.
The chimps arrived here two years ago, some after spending years in 24-hour isolation, awaiting their next round of medical experimentation.
"That's really the same as putting a human in solitary confinement," said Goodrich.
They were sickly and scared, and some even showed signs of post traumatic stress disorder.
"It was like they were just shell shocked," said Goodrich.
Now the chimps are thriving, each becoming more independent and playful every day. Jamie likes to wear cowboy boots, Foxy's favorite toy is her troll doll. And Jody, captured in the wild as a baby, is finally learning how to make a nest, something she never had the chance to learn from her mother:
"It's still kind of hard for me to believe they came out on the other side as well as they did," said Goodrich.
But there are hundreds additional chimps just like these who remain locked up in 5-by-7-foot cages - warehoused like unwanted property - simply waiting to die.
"A life sentence is a good way to describe it, and they've never done anything wrong to deserve it," said Goorich.
Now, a proposal before Congress called the Great Ape Protection Act would outlaw biomedical experiments on chimps and release the 600 of them owned by the government to sanctuaries.
But as it stands right now, there isn't nearly enough room to care for all those chimps at the handful of sanctuaries across the country.
Even if the bill becomes law, without funding for more facilities, many of the chimps currently under federal lock-up may never escape their cages, never feeling the compassion of humankind as opposed to the cruelty.
"It's a prison sentence that they don't deserve," said Goodrich.
"We know how intelligent they are. We know that they suffer," said Goodrich. "So day in and day out it's just a terrible life to think about for them."
The Great Ape Protection Act is still in committee on Capitol Hill. Supporters want congress to use the $25 million a year spent housing the chimps in government warehouses to build or expand sanctuaries across the country.

Asado is a term used both for a range of barbecue techniques and the social event of having or attending a barbecue in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and southern Brazil. In these countries asado is also the standard word for barbecue. An asado usually consisting of beef alongside various other meats, which are cooked on a grill, called a parrilla, or open fire. It is considered a traditional dish in Argentina

Have you ever made a chimichurri sauce? It's an Argentinean sauce or condiment, similar to pesto, that is popular throughout South America. This basic version uses fresh parsley, oregano, garlic, oil and vinegar and a little bit of chili pepper, though the variations on this theme are endless. What I love about it is that it makes use of the parsley that is growing like crazy in our garden, and everything else we are either growing or have in our pantry. In Argentina it is used both as a marinade and a sauce for grilled steak, but you can use it also with fish, chicken, or even pasta.

LOS SIMULADORES .....LOVE THIS SHOW !!! ARGENTINE !!!

los Simuladores (The Pretenders) is an Argentinian television series about a small team of con artists for hire, who use their skills to solve common people's life problems. The show ran for two seasons, from 2002 to 2003. It was very popular and highly acclaimed, winning a Golden Martín Fierro Award. A number of remakes have been produced for various markets worldwide. There are also plans to release a film based on the series.
The original series was produced and aired by the Argentine network Telefé, and ran for two 13-episode seasons in 2002 and 2003. The series is occasionally shown in reruns on Telefé. Remakes were soon produced in Chile and in Spain (the latter produced by Cuatro), using some of the same actors and production members. Another remake was made in Russia. Since 2008, Sony Pictures Television International has produced a remake for Mexican television network Televisa;^[1] as of late 2010, early production is starting on a third season, in which Salma Hayek is scheduled to appear.Comienza ahora la segunda temporada de los simuladores en Cuatro. Originalmente Los Simuladores es una serie producida por Telefé en Argentina, con un planteamiento ciertamente innovador.
Los simuladores son una especie de versión moderna de El Equipo A (o Brigada A, en algunos países de SudAmerica) aunque con las suficientes diferencias como para ser dos productos totalmente diferentes.
La misión de estos particulares héroes contemporáneos consiste en arreglar los problemas de la gente mediante la realización de Operativos de simulación (de ahí el nombre de Los Simuladores), y ¿en qué consiste un operativo de simulación?.
Pues consiste en manipular la realidad que envuelve a una persona o un conjunto de personas (habitualmente la causa de tus problemas) de tal forma que el problema que tenías desaparezca, o que efectivamente puedas hacer algo por el mismo. Pondría un ejemplo con los jefes, pero normalmente éstos (si están muy arriba) ya acostumbran a tener una visión distorsionada de la realidad. Para comprenderlos, hay que verlos.
En la versión Argentina (la chilena y la española, pues no es lo mismo) los protagonistas son los siguientes (siguiendo el orden de la foto, de izquierda a derecha):

• Mario Santos, responsable de la planificación y podríamos decir que jefe de la banda. Altamente culto e inteligente, acostumbra a pedir fuego a las víctimas para encender sus puros. En la segunda temporada argentina nos descubren que Mario Santos es el nombre del niño de una novela escrita por su padre, y ya en la misma ése niño comenzaba a realizar tareas de simulación. Por el tema de los puros, vendría a ser el John Annibal Smith del grupo
• Pablo Lampone, técnica y mobilidad, se encarga habitualmente de conseguir los materiales más inverosímiles para la realización de las simulaciones. Un tipo altamente reservado, hace muy buenas migas con su perro, le gustan los deportes de aventura; en la segunda temporada incluso ha de acudir a una psicóloga ya que considera que el resto del equipo no valora adecuadamente sus logros dentro del equipo.
• Gabriel Medina, investigación, realiza tareas de investigación previas a poner los operativos en marcha. Al contrario que Carbone no oculta sus sentimientos de amistad y amor por el resto del equipo, situación que a veces se les hace incómoda al resto de componentes. Tiene un sentido de la justica altamente poético, tanto que en una ocasión en El vengador infantil a punto está de romper el éxito del operativo.
• Emilio Ravenna, caracterización, un monstruo polifacético capaz de hacerse pasar por cualquiera utilizando el nombre de Máximo Coseti, auténtico imán para las mujeres, vive con 3 (al menos) hermosas mujeres. Vendría a ser como el Templeton Peck, pero en feo. ¡Éste tipo es un fierro!

Desafortunadamente, en Argentina sólo realizaron 2 temporadas, ya que es una serie simplemente EXCELENTE. Aunque la versión de Cuatro no sea tan buena (a mi gusto) como la argentina tiene la cualidad de tener al mismo Mario Santos que en la versión Argentina, y recomiendo a todo el mundo que vea la serie: domingos por la noche.

DOWNTON ABBEY....YOU HAVE TO SEE IT !!!!

The series is set in the fictional Downton Abbey, stately home of the Earl and Countess of Grantham, and follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants early in the reign of King George V. The series spans the two years prior to the Great War, commencing with news of the sinking of the Titanic, an event that triggers much of the plot.
Highclere Castle in Hampshire was used as Downton Abbey, with the servants' living areas constructed and filmed at Ealing Studios.^[3]
The village of Bampton in Oxfordshire was used for filming the outdoor scenes, most notably St Mary's Church and the village library, which became the entrance to the cottage hospital. Series characters often refer to the North Yorkshire towns of Malton, Easingwold, and Kirby; Ripon and Thirsk have also been mentioned. However, the Downton estate is centred on the fictional village of Downton, a place name in several English counties but not in Yorkshire.
The first series cost an estimated £1 million an episode. It is also the most successful British period drama since Brideshead Revisited, with British ratings exceeding 10 million viewers.^[4] Similarily, the series enjoyed successful ratings in the United States, averaging over 6 million viewers per episode.^[5]

PONYTAILS...

There's a ponytail and then there's a ponytail. One is basic and boring. The other is anything but.

Here to tell you how to take your pulled-back hair from ho-hum to oh-yum! is popular New York City hairstylist, Kenneth Tepper, from the trendy Pierre Michel Salon.

Ponytails are all the rage these days because they're swingy, young and sleek according to Tepper. "Who doesn't want that?" he asks. In addition to being a hip look, the versatile pony also offers a cool, off-the-neck style for a workout with an easy transition into a night on the town.

The trick is to make sure your ponytail is flattering and fashionable (no limp locks here!).

"Right now the most fashionable ponytail is the side pony," says Tepper. "Worn low and to one side, it's super sexy."

It's also very red carpet (as we've seen lately with stars like Queen Latifah, Carrie Underwood, Ashley Greene, Shakira and Cameron Diaz) to wear it high, twisted, wavy or in a bun.

But you don't have to walk the streets of Hollywood to be glamorous with your ponytail. With a few easy steps, Tepper says no matter what length your hair is, you can pull it back to create a sexy summertime look that is anything but boring!

For shorter hairstyles: If your hair is chin to shoulder-length and layered, do a small pony in the back and take two to three inch sections around the face. Give each section a twist and secure it back with two criss-crossed bobby pins. "Looks downtown casual and hip in five minutes," says Tepper. "Be a little daring, use bobby pins that don't match your hair color too!"

For longer hairstyles: Start with a pony then work the hair into a messy bun. Pull out some strands for an extra messy and sexy look. You can also braid your pony says Tepper. The versatile braid can be worn down, twisted into a bun for a plaited look, wrapped around the head or french braided. "If you don't know how," says Tepper, "have someone show you and practice -- you'll be an expert in no time!"

For a dressier look, conceal the ponytail holder with a small section of your own hair. Pull a thin piece from beneath the ponytail and wrap it around the band two to three times before securing it with bobby pins. If your hair is straight and resists wrapping, curl that piece first with a curling iron, Tepper advises, and add a little hairspray. "Magic! It wraps around and stays almost without the bobby pins."

Whatever pulled-back look you choose this summer, Tepper reminds us to take care of our tresses and don't over-do it with the shampoo. "Although we like to take extra showers in the summer," he says, "just rinsing the hair will keep it healthy. Warm water brings the oils at the scalp down to the ends where you need them. So rinse as often as you like, but wash a little less and keep your hair healthy all summer long."

GROW OUT THAT BAD HAIRCUT...

Sadly, there's no fast way to grow out a bad haircut. That said, there are things you can do to minimize the nightmare until your hair grows back (which it does at a rate of about half an inch a month).

First try washing and restyling your hair yourself, since the way a stylist does your hair can make it look worse than it really is, says Eric Fisher, owner of the Eric Fisher Salon, in Wichita, Kansas. Then rely on accessories to help you through the growing-out phase. A headband or a barrette can hold back too-short bangs, and a ponytail or a loose bun can camouflage too-flippy layers.

Quick tip: If you’re really unhappy with a cut, voice your dissatisfaction to the salon manager that day. Ask for a different stylist, who can help reshape the cut. Most managers will be happy to oblige.
